Kampong Glam is the historically Muslim quarter of Singapore. This district’s popular Arab Street, Baghdad Street, Kandahar Street and Haji Lane not only showcase tastes of the Middle East, but they also feature local independent fashion boutiques and quirky little stores offering unique shopping experiences.
Nestled right in the heart of this culturally vibrant village is the 64-room shophouse style boutique hotel on Jalan Sultan, appropriately called The Sultan. Beautifully updated yet faithfully preserved, The Sultan retains many striking architectural features such as grand colonial arches and columns, highlighting glimpses of Singapore’s rich history.
The Sultan guest rooms offer the perks of modern comforts and luxuries with a touch of old world Singapore charm. Eight different types of rooms are available at this hotel, with no two rooms exactly the same. From Single Rooms for solo travelers all the way up to the largest Loft Suites for the venturesome, there’s something to suit everyone’s needs.
We stayed in a spacious Sultan Suite (see video below), featuring a row of full-length shutter windows that overlook the quaint and eclectic Aliwal Street area, complete with a tiny mosque right across the road. The Sultan bathrobes and bedroom slippers provided in our room made for a cozy stay, while data port high-speed internet access (wifi is offered in the lobby) and iPod docking station were convenient amenities.
Food & beverage options include Moroccan cuisine at Pasha Restaurant & Bar. This two-level, multi-concept restaurant, bar and private lounge boasts gorgeous architecture, authentic Arabian furnishings, a lively alfresco area and full-length rooftop balcony. The enchanting atmosphere, especially in the outdoor lounge area, makes the perfect place to sip cocktails and unwind in the evening. Here is our brief video overview of The Sultan:
Many thanks to The Sultan for our lovely stay!
