Conveniently located right next to the Central Midlevels outdoor escalator in the SoHo district of Hong Kong, we decided this cozy corner cafe would present the perfect spot to enjoy El Taco Loco’s self-described “muy authentica” Mexican dishes.
All menu items offered at El Taco Loco are reasonably priced and there are even drink specials every evening. Entree items range from $40 – $80 HKD ($5 – $10 USD) per dish.
Still jet-legged, we came for a late lunch/early dinner and were the only customers in the restaurant. We didn’t think much about the lack of patronage since 4pm was an unconventional time to dine.
Our Lime Sodas were the best part of our meals. These refreshing beverages included exquisitely fresh-from-the-tree mini limes, lime cordial, simple syrup, and tingling, sparkly soda water.
My Chicken Taco Salad ($42 HKD) was served in a plastic container and seemed as though it had been sitting around for a long time: the chicken was lukewarm and the lettuce was soft. I was craving something along the lines of a Burrito Bowl from Chipotle, but inevitably ended up disappointed. You won’t find a lot of silver utensils or porcelain platters at El Taco Loco – they keep things pretty casual with paper napkins and disposable cutlery.
Gary’s 7 Layer Nachos ($72 HKD) dish was not what we had expected either. Served in a tin container, the melted cheese was not hot, and the taco chips underneath were still cold and hard.
Perhaps we just came on an off-night, 0r we must have ordered the wrong items. Other travelers and local expats seem to really enjoy El Tac Loco. It does have an excellent location, great drinks, and is the perfect spot for people watching in the so very cosmopolitan SoHo district of Hong Kong.
