Singapore’s Hotel Fort Canning is a heritage boutique hotel perched atop 14th century Fort Canning Hill. This true green oasis in the city made us feel like we were really getting away from it all, and yet we were a mere 5-minute walk from shopping on Orchard Road and 10-minute stroll from entertainment in Clarke Quay.
Once used as a base for the British Far East Command during World War II, the property has been beautifully restored by Singapore’s award-winning architectural company DP Architects. In addition to its majestic historical architecture, the remarkable glass-topped Archaeological Pits embedded in the hotel lobby floor are filled with fascinating 14th and 19th Century artifacts unearthed on site.
The hotel’s private lounge, a mixture of classic and contemporary interior complemented by signatures furniture pieces from award-wining Italian designer Poltrona Frau, offers a chic and elegant ambiance. All in-house guests have access to this exclusive lounge where they can enjoy unlimited light snacks, juice, tea and coffee (from the largest Nespresso we’ve ever seen, called The Tower), as well as complimentary wine, champagne, and canapes during cocktail hour every evening.
Hotel Fort Canning features a collection of 86 stylized, boutique rooms and suites. Our Deluxe Room (pictured above) with its towering high-ceiling, opens to a white marble bathroom set against a picture window offering a lovely view of the city. In-room amenities include a state-of-the-art Zeppelin Mini iPod docking station by Bowers & Wilkins, and an easy touch panel for temperature control mood lighting. Complimentary wifi internet access is a standard feature of this hotel’s guest rooms, along with handy international plug extensions, and a customized pillow menu for discerning sleepers. Need your caffeine fix in the morning? Coffee is certainly provided with a personal Nespresso machine along with a selection of fine TWG teas.
Hotel facilities include a 240 square metre gymnasium, featuring state-of-the-art TechnoGym fitness equipment, and multiple outdoor swimming pools. We will say that the free form pool (pictured above) was the loveliest pool we’ve ever swam in. Yes, it looks beautiful and was exceptionally clean and well maintained but the water was just so glorious to swim in. The reason? A water filtration system that is based on NASA technology is used to sanitize the pool instead of harsh chlorine.
Food & beverage options include Southern Italian fare at Gattopardo, premium cocktails and imported wine at Tisettanta Lounge, and contemporary Asian cuisine is highlighted at The Glass House. We had the chance to experience the fare at The Glass House restaurant on four separate occasions – twice at buffet breakfast, once by the pool and once for room service.
